Course Information
The 40-hour courses run 2 evenings per week (Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday) from 5:30 PM – 9:30 PM. Each term is 5 weeks in length. When classes fall on a holiday, they will be rescheduled for the Friday of that same week.
The 6–9-hour course runs 1 evening per week from 5:30 PM – 8:30 PM for 3 consecutive weeks.
It is strongly recommended that online learners have:
- Daily access to a reliable computer (Windows Pc recommended) for the full duration of the class.
- Reliable internet service with high-speed internet. A cable connection is the best however staying closer to the Wi-Fi also works
- A comfortable chair
- A workspace away from distractions
- A working microphone and video camera
- Earphones or earbuds (optional)

ENGL 074 – Advanced English Grammar and Writing Fluency
This course focuses on advanced grammatical errors made by writers who are mastering advanced essay writing. It provides a solid background in writing skills for students who wish to take English 102. (40 hours)
ENGL 102 – English for Professional Purposes
This course develops proficiency in various forms of writing, critical thinking and analysis, listening and speaking, and examination of various reading materials. A special focus is placed on reading and analyzing articles related to professional programs. (40 hours)
MATH 101 – Foundation Mathematics for Professionals
This course is for learners who require a refresher in key mathematical concepts – basic math skills, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and proportion, algebra, equations and problem-solving. (40 hours)
BIO 103 – Human Biology Prep for Nurses
This course focuses on the basic Biology knowledge and skills required by persons employed in a variety of health care contexts. These include a study of human systems such as digestion, respiration, the circulatory system, the nervous system, the senses, the endocrine and reproductive systems. Additional topics may be covered as needed. (40 hours)
COMP 101 – Computer Skills and Online Learning.
This course develops technology skills used in online learning. It focuses on communicating in an online classroom and completing assignments using Office 365 software: Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Focus is also placed on improving typing speed and accuracy. (6-9 hours)
Additional Information
Each 40-hour course is $250 + the cost of textbooks. All materials can be purchased through the Columbia College Bookstore or can be obtained through other sources.
The COMP 101 course is $100.
Course fees may be waived for those learners who have been conditionally accepted into a Columbia College professional program. Please contact an admission advisor for more information.

College Prep Upgrading falls under continuing education. Columbia College will award Certificates of Course Completion to those learners who successfully pass their courses.
