Program Information
- This course is offered in full-time and part-time (evening) schedules.
- Full-Time: Monday – Friday (9:30 am – 2:00 pm)
- Part-Time: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (6:30 pm – 9:00 pm)
- Delivery: Hybrid
- Classes are taught both online and in-person. Our well-trained and experienced staff will provide training and support to students who require additional assistance with online language training.
Students may be evaluated by Calgary Language Assessment & Referral Centre (CLARC) to determine placement in the program

Take a Columbia College EAL Assessment
- The EAL Program welcomes all qualified applicants from across Alberta who have a minimum CLB 3, access to a digital device and internet connection.
- Permanent Residents or Convention Refugees are encouraged to take the LINC Program before applying for the EAL Program. Permanent Residents are required to present a LINC certificate with CLB 4 in listening/speaking when they apply for citizenship. To receive a LINC certificate, clients need to attend the LINC Program.
In our program, you will find a wide range of offerings to support your learning journey:
- Comprehensive career advising for both short-term and long-term goals
- Development of essential language skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, and numeracy (math)
- Specialized modules focusing on pronunciation, speech clarity, communication, and presentation skills
- Writing enhancement and computer courses
- Integrated computer study across all classes
- English for Academic Purposes Courses
- Work Strategies & Work Experience Courses
Classes are offered from CLB 4 – CLB 8. Students who achieve CLB 8 in all four skill areas will graduate from the EAL program and will be eligible to apply for other programs at Columbia College.
EAL Foundations (CLB 4-5)
- Learn all the important skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary.
- Use technology to manage your learning.
- Participate in different activities like discussions, presentations, role-plays, and group work.
- Special classes are offered to help you improve specific skills, like speaking, presenting, writing, work strategies, and using computers.
Pathways Preparation (CLB 6-7)
- Prepare for entering a professional or work environment.
- Prepare for EAP courses.
- Emphasis on essential skills and competencies for academic excellence and career readiness.
- Expand your vocabulary and learn intermediate listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
- Begin to learn how to write essays, reports, and read academic and non-academic articles.
English for Academic Purposes/LEAP (CLB 7-8)
- Our EAP Program offers four courses: LEAP CLB 7 (1 & 2) and LEAP CLB 8 (1 & 2). This program is designed to prepare students for higher education, as well as for professional careers. The program also serves as a seamless pathway into Columbia College’s professional programs. in some cases, without further English assessment.
- Focus on expanding academic vocabulary and advancing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
- Specific focus on academic skills enhancement.
- LEAP students achieving a CLB 8 in all skills may directly enter some of Columbia College’s Professional Programs.
Columbia has no funded spots available in our English and an Additional Language, Employment Training, and Academic Upgrading programs.
